In Cangas de Onís we find a natural park specialized in the autochthonous fauna of the Principality. The Grandera zoo is an ideal space when it comes to making plans with children. In this faunistic center you can see authentic Brown bears Asturians in a state of semi-freedom and in their natural habitat. These bears are perhaps the main attraction of a zoo that offers a more than interesting educational trip thanks to the 400 species of animals that inhabit it.
The tour One kilometer is conveniently done over an hour, which, on average, is the estimated time for the visit. When accessing the facilities we will be given a sheet with the recommended itinerary and other general indications to get more out of our trip.
Many species that are discovered throughout the different enclosures are reproduced in the facilities of the zoo itself, some of them almost exclusively, such as the otter, the Siberian owl, the little owl, the common ratchet and the lilac-breasted rattlesnake, the glasses, the white stork, the brown bear, the boreal lynx and a long etcetera.
The regional fauna It is represented by 200 species, the rest correspond to Iberian and international breeds. In this great showcase we have a great opportunity to photograph bears, wolves, chamois, otters, lynxes, capercaillies, vultures, vultures, hawks, boars, foxes, deer, roe deer, hedgehogs, martens, kestrels, several species of eagles, wild cats , storks, dozens of reptiles, woodpeckers, royal owls, an extensive colony of ducks ...
In La Grandera you can meet all the species of nocturnal raptors European, gathered in a unique collection throughout Spain. In terms of raptors, the center also offers environmental programs such as «Falconry School», activity focused on groups of schoolchildren, as well as the general public, consisting of a flight exhibition, explanatory talk about birds of prey, training techniques and free flight of day and night raptors. Depending on the time and weather conditions two or three sessions a day are made.
The director of this unique park, the naturalist Ernesto Junco, has been concerned since the opening of that also prioritizes a work of recovery of sick, injured, or abandoned species, in collaboration with public and private institutions.
In La Grandera there are also successful species breeding programs. In recent times, for example, the team led by Ernesto Junco has managed to breed three new species in captivity: the Egyptian vulture, the polar wolf and the Lapland tawny owl.
Opening hours: generally open from eleven in the morning until one hour before dusk without interruption. From January 7 to March 19, it is only open on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays.
