Almost a third of Asturias has been declared a Protected Natural Space of great interest. This is the best measure to protect this natural patrimony and leave it as it remains for the future generations.
Now we will show each one of the most surprising natural spaces to enjoy in this region.
In the East of Asturias
· Aesilla Bufones
They are located in Puertas of Vidiago, in the council of Llanes.
Seawater ascends with pressure through the perforations carved on the rocks due to the erosion by the sea. When the water ascends, there is a kind of noise similar to a whistling or snort which gives name to this phenomenon. (In spanish from «bufido», (snort), we obtain «bufon» (the special name given to that is rocky holes). A pedestrian and cyclist road follows the coastal line of Llanes.
· Bufones of Santiuste
Between the localities of La Franca and Buelna, both in the council of Llanes.
These rocky holes are considered the biggest in the Eastern coast. In those days of heavy is the water stream can reach until 40 meters of height.
The complex of Cobijeru
It is in the proximities of Buelna, also in the council of Llanes.
This place covers the interior beach of Acacias which is linked to the sea through two subterranean channels. Also here is the cave of Cobijero, which has a small cave full of natural formations.
The beach of Guipiyuri
It is in the town of Naves, in the council of Llanes.
This is an interior beach with sand out of quartzes. It seems like a small swimming-pool during high tides.
The beach of Vega
This big area encloses the beach of Vega and its valuable dune system. Here there is also a fluvial area in the mouth of a short stream called Acebo. In Entrepeñas we can find quartzes and other minerals.
The willow wood of Buelles
The town of Buelles is in the council of Peñamellera Baja.
This place is on the shores of the river Deva, on direction to El Mazo. This is a beautiful route along forests of willows that extend for 20 kilometers. This is probably one of the most beautiful forests in the North of Spain. There are white willows, other species of trees and a deep pool where we can fish salmons. Sea trouts and salmons are also part of the tasteful local cookery.
The Mountain range of Trave
It is in the proximities of the town of Bulnes.
The mountain range of Trave currently has the deepest gap in Spain and the sixth in the world. It is famous for its complexity and verticality. This range is the union of three big chasms: Torca of Laureola (2.042 m), Torca of Alba (1.975 m) and the Sima of Trave (1.917 m).
It is in the Central Massif of the Peaks of Europe.
Torca of Urriellu is a broad cave that has a big sima of 1.017 meters of depth. Through this cave there is a stream of water called river Silence. This mountainous massif is made of limestone. It is also part of a big alpine plate tectonic and its water streams have given shape to wonderful defiles, chasms ...
Jurassic traces in the center eastern coast
There are three main localities where we can find different traces: Colunga, Ribadesella and Villaviciosa.
In these places every day new fossils and dinosaurs traces appear. The coastal line that extends from Bowls (Villaviciosa) until Camangu (Ribadesella) forms a beautiful scene of low cliffs where dinosaurs left its old traces.
The Mountain range of Toneyo
It is in the mountain range of Beza, in the council of Amieva.
The mountain range of Toneyu is the biggest Asturian cavity with caves of 19 km of length and 614 meters of depth. Here there are deep pools and gorges ideal for those lovers of extreme sports.
The Mountain range of Jitu
It is in the western side of the Peaks of Europe, in the locality of Onís. The mountain range of Jitu is a complex subterranean system which extends for 8 km. This place has an important biological interest in fact, a new genre of the family of diplopodus, called Asturasoma Fowleri, was discovered.
In the central Asturian coast
The Beach Espartal
It is between La Peñona and the river of Avilés, in the council of Castrillón. This beach has 3 km of length. It is a place of great beauty with the most extensive dune system of Asturias. Here we find many species, such as the solandela, raspalengua, madroño (local names), laurels, sea thistles ...
The Island of the Deva and the big Beach of Berries
It is between Castrillón and Soto del Barco, in the council of Castrillón. The big beach of Bayas houses one of the most representative dune systems of Asturias. The island of the Deva is the largest coast islet of this region and a perfect enclave for numerous birds.
Carbayón of Lavandera
In Tueya, parish church of Lavandera, in the council of Gijón.
It is an oak tree with big dimensions, 20 meters of height and a trunk of almost 7 m of circumference. Today it is the town symbol.
Carbayera of the Tragamón
It is in the town of Cefontes, in the council of Gijón.
This is an oak forest that is the biggest in extension and age. There are also young oaks and an important concentration of birds: blackbirds, robins, coal tits ...
Pool of Zeluán and the cove of Lloredo
Both are in the municipality of Gozón.
The pool of Zeluán is one of the oldest marshes of the river of Avilés. It got dried and was filled in thanks to the new surrounding industries that emerged in the 50`s. During low tides it forms a cove of fangs of 12 hectares with a big ecological diversity.
In the center of this region
Yew of Salas
It is in the council of Salas.
It is a wonderful specimen of yew with 16 m of height and 6.5 m of perimeter.
The defile of the river Pine
It is in the council of Aller.
The narrow defiles of the river Pine are formed by a medium length river. The limestone river shores of Peña Redonda are carved on the same river forming vertical walls with a width of 6 m.
Yew of Santibañez de la Fuente
It is in the council of Aller.
The yew of Santibanez de la Fuente has 12 meters of height, 3.3 of circumference and 15 meters of diameter. It is around 500 years old according to its dimensions, but we do not know it sure.
The defile of Las Xanas
It is in the council of Quirós and in Santo Adriano.
The defile of Las Xanas is a unique geological formation of great beauty. It is one of the most crowded and emblematic routes of Asturias. Hazels, ash trees, lime trees, maples accompany us along this route. It is a wonderful and unique landscape.
The Yew and Oak of Bermiego
It is in Bermiego in the council of Quirós.
The first one is a wonderful specimen of yew of 7 meters of perimeter and a height of 9 meters. The second one with 12 meters of height and 7 meters of perimeter is a unique specimen of oak. Both are considered extraordinary natural monuments.
Route of Alba
It is located in Soto of Agues, in the council of Sobreescobio.
The route of Alba has become one of the most emblematic routes of the Natural Park of Redes thanks to its unique beauty and easy walking.
The Passes of Marabio
These are in the councils of Teverga, Yernes and Tameza.
It is a complex mountain range with deep valleys and an important subterranean development that originates big caves and simas.
It is in the council of Teverga.
This is the second biggest Asturian cavity with a length of 14.5 km. It also has a hydrological area thanks to the active course of the river Sampedro.
In the West of Asturias
The Yew of Santa Coloma
It is in the council of Allande.
It is a unique specimen of yew placed next to Romanesque church, with a height of 8 meters and a circumference of 5.6 meters. Possibly this is the oldest yew in Asturias.
The Yew of Lake
It is in the council of Allande.
It is a unique specimen of yew of 9 meters of height and 5.8 meters of perimeter.
The cork oak of Boxu
It is in Bojo, in the council of Allande.
It is a cork oak forest located in the proximities of the mountain range of Carondio. This area suffered from devastation but nowadays it is being reforested.
The Beach of Penarronda
It is in Santa Gadea, in the council of Castropol.
It is an open and wide beach with extensive dunes. It counts with the presence of some exclusive plant species, very rare in Asturias. [More information]
Turbera of Las Dueñas
It is in the town of Las Dueñas, in the council of Cudillero.
It is the most important littoral pedestrian bog known in Asturias, since it spreads for more than 27 hectares. Its flora is protected by the regional law.
The Caves of Andina
These are in the town of Andina, in the council of El Franco.
It is a karstic area developed over marbles belonging to the Lower Cambric. These formed the town of Vegadeo and the surrounding semi-close valley which streams flow into the river Mazo.
The Beach of Frexulfe
It is in the council of Navia.
This beach has a length of 700 meters and in its eastern limit we can find the mouth of a stream.
The Carbayón of Valentín
It is in the council of Tineo.
It is in fact, an oak tree with no height but for the dimensions of its trunk that reaches 10 meters of circumference. The age of this tree dated from a period before the discovering of America, according to the Asturian Encyclopaedia.
The Fayona of Eirós
It is in the town of Eirós, in the council of Tineo.
It is a big specimen of beech with a trunk of 5 meters and a wide crown whose diameter goes beyond 30 meters.
Hoces of the Esva
It is in the council of Valdés.
The river Esva flows through a narrow gorge carved into little quartzes, whose river shores can reach 400 meters of unevenness.
The waterfalls of Oneta
They are in the village of Villayón.
They are permanent waterfalls located in a landscape of great beauty. Here are numerous and possible routes to walk and get relaxed in this wonderful landscape.
