The Cape Peñas

Roars the sea

Everywhere on earth can be determined by two numbers, its latitude and longitude. The numbers of Cape Peñas are as follows: 43º 39,4 'North and 5º 50,8' West. These coordinates point out an important fact to take into account: we are placed in one of the most northern points in Asturias. We are going beyond the most northern. What these numbers can not mark are the boundaries of an abyss that forms one of the most spectacular capes of Spanish geography.

There, at more than 100 meters above sea level, one can enjoy an exceptional experience on a sharp cliff that remains at least the bow of a giant transatlantic. The cruiser invites us to place where the winds blow strongly, bringing the sea with all its anger, and over our head seagulls fly freely. The swell goes against the bow of our imaginary boat, which is in the end, to powerful armor of the coastal land. This land is square in shape, both abstract and geometric at the same time, also mysterious.

If we have a look from the Cape Peñas, we should breathe deeply and look to the great beyond, in this case down. There will be the radiant and lively while foam of the sea. The small is lands appear as if they are looking for help.

In our particular daydream at noon we start to walk to the West or to the East. We can walk everywhere we want because there are no limits in our journey. We keep walking and 180º ahead we see how the end of the day reaches midnight. When we have walked 360º, we go back to our starting point and it could be midday again, yesterday midday. Today or everyday. Time flies when we go on a trip in "The Boat Peñas" We can see its triangular shape on the horizon of Asturias, it is like an artistic monument by the sea.

Special protected place: Cape Peñas

Geographically speaking the Cape Peñas is located just in the middle of the Asturian coast, between Gijón and Avilés, in the council of Gozón. The area of this piece of land of 19,2 square kilometers and it has numerous natural holes, that are considered protected places because of its biological importance as habitat for many birds and other migratory species. Here, we find all the different types of heather of the region, as well as many geologic formations. Going to the later part of the region, the geologic formations are less prominent, with fluvial valleys that have formed a plain peninsula that up to this moment has not been much damaged by the effect of the earthy waters. From this point, if we look further we can see other inhabited places on this coastal line. From the highest point of The Gaviera (94 m.) We can see the Cape Vidio and even the Cape Busto to the West (100 km far form the council of Luarca) and to the East, the Punta of Castro, Punta del Narvata, Punta el Paguión, Punta the ending Cow in Punta Tazones (60 kilometers of distance from Villaviciosa).

The space of Cape Peñas is formed cliffs and beaches, many of them with dunes, from the West to East being important places: the quicksand of Xagó and the beaches of Portezuelos, Verdicio, Ferrero, Llumeres or the one of Bañugues. Here, we can include the small island of La Erbosa, the biggest of the Asturian coast and also big in size the Island of Deva.

The lighthouse of Peñas

On the top of this Cape stands the lighthouse of Peñas, the most important one on the Asturian coast. It has given light since 1852 and is the main guide for many sailors. This light can be seen from 41 miles away and even with misty weather it can be seen from 18 miles away. Before 1852 fire was used in the light of Peñas to clear the way back home for the seamen. This fact proves the cruel conditions of sailing and lifestyle of the fishermen at that time.

Now, we wake up from this beautiful daydream, coming back home safely.
