The scenery in a garden

Visiting the Botanic Atlantic Garden of Gijon is always a unique experience, an excursion to an earthy paradise created by the hands of humans.

It is a living space, probably the most natural in this city that occupies 15 hectares of ground. It has been designed as a big exhibitor and it is in fact, a green microcosm in itself, in which we find more than 15000 plants and trees.

With the passing of time it expects to house all the vegetable species that grow in both sides of the Atlantic. This is an ambitious plan, with a great chromatic and biological variety that makes of it a unique garden on its own. There is nothing similar in our Peninsula, as regards its dimension and beauty. The whole visit around this exhibition site may take us four hours to complete it all.

This close and dense jungle can be visited following a planned itinerary along four differenced areas. At the reception, we will be informed about this guided route and we will be able to enjoy an audiovisual itinerary full of ecosystems and flora from ancient times, when there was no continental difference. Then we will introduce ourselves little by little into the present time. Then we will find how forests are well cataloged together with many other vegetable species. The Botanic Garden of Gijón is the most faithful prove of natural evolution. But it also wants to make aware of the importance of nature in order to preserve it for future generations. In this sense, we are being taught the love for nature which is important for our children and young people.

Currently, Asturias hides a famous forest richness. Places like the forest of Muniellos, the wood of Peloño, the Park of Redes... make of this region a unique natural place, full of forests and with a little reserve of the biosphere. This Asturian treasure is completely reflected in this huge garden located in the Cantabrian Coast: beech woods, oak forests, bushes, meadows, amphibious and aquatic plants also including a wide selection of rare and threatened plants.

The Vegetal Factory is another name that this beautiful Garden receives. In this area we only have to admire those living entities called plants and analyze how they live and grow. Here we can also find trees that depend on the season, are adorned with flowers, such as the apple trees belonging to the Old World. Exotic fruit like avocados and custard apples are now found in our New World. At last, this Factory will surprise you with kitchen gardens of both territories, with collections of spices, aromatic and medicinal plants ...

Now we go to the Garden of the Island a wonderful natural path which is more than 150 years old and which was inaugurated by the native of Gijón, Florencio Valdés. The preservation of this singular continent is part of the aims of this little Botanic planet. In addition, in this area there are modern hydraulic systems, lakes, labyrinths, splendorous flowers and majestic and centenary trees such as the cedars. A collection of bushes complete this part as well as an exhibition of tree ferns and Oriental plants.

Up to here we have been walking for a while and now we are getting closer to the Atlantic itinerary, one of the vastest corners of this park. Here we find landscapes which resemble those of the shores of the Atlantic Ocean. Here is also represented the Mediterranean, Tropical-Caribbean, American and European climate. This last one is represented by the Carbayera of Tragamón (Declared Natural Monument in this Principality of Asturias).

The nature of this Garden is reinforced by cultural and ecological initiatives carried out by its own managers. Conferences and meetings are welcomed yearly. Apart from this natural museum, this area counts with a specialized book shop, flower shop and a glazed coffee which is a wonderful place to relax oneself.
