    A tribute from your city

Several buildings of interest congregate in the Cimadevilla neighborhood of Gijón in the Plaza de Jovellanos, with the Jovellanos Birthplace Museum occupying a greater relevance.

This museum was inaugurated in 1971 in one of the most emblematic buildings of the city: the late XNUMXth century house-palace in which the enlightened Gaspar Melchor de Jovellanos was born and lived. Its main mission consists of the dissemination, conservation and investigation of the municipal artistic heritage in addition to commemorating the figure and the work of Jovellanos. Outstanding works by Asturian painting of the XNUMXth and XNUMXth centuries hang on its walls, as well as contemporary sculptures. An artistic collection made up of more than 3.000 works, including paintings, sculptures, drawings, engravings, illustrations, photographs and works on new media.

Inside does not go unnoticed a beautiful interior patio. In it musical concerts take place with certain frequency. Attached to this house, and forming part of its structure, is the Chapel of Nuestra Señora de los Remedios, where the much-mentioned Melchor Gaspar de Jovellanos rests, the standard bearer of Spanish illustration.

We left the museum to give ourselves a walk around the area. In the building opposite we find a hotel establishment that has the honor of having been the headquarters of the Institute of Nautica and Mineralogy that Jovellanos founded.

We take Calle de los Remedios, on our left we see a tower with a pinkish tone. Is Clock Tower which, built on the ruins of a Roman tower, was a prison for the judicial district of Gijón until the beginning of the XNUMXth century. Today it is an archaeological museum and municipal archive, with a good number of photographs from different historical periods. We recommend leaning out of the top floor windows and enjoying the great views of the city.

We turn right, along the Calle de Campo Grande to end our walk in the Plaza de Arturo Arias, popularly known as the Agustinas Recoletas Square, from the Tobacco Factory or Campo de las Monjas. Conditioned at the end of the 90, it is the ideal place to enjoy cider with friends. The fishermen, the nets in the sun, the cigar makers and the women who daily went to the laundry, have given way to many young and old who meet in it to chat and enjoy, aired with the oldest and most modern breeze in the city .
