An incursion into the Atlantic Botanical Garden is an authentic experience, an excursion to an earthly paradise reconquered for the present thanks to the planning skills of the human being.
It is a living space, recreated but natural to the maximum, that occupies 15 hectares of perfectly designed land and becomes a great exhibitor, a green and flowery microcosm in which they grow more than 15.000 plants and trees.
There is nothing similar in the Peninsula, neither in dimensions nor in pretensions, and a good tour of the site will only be completed satisfactorily in about four hours of visit. Over time, it intends to house all the plant species that grow on both sides of the Atlantic. The ambitious nature of the project, and the enormous chromatic and biological variety that now hoards, make it a "Jardinón" unique in its kind.
This close and dense jungle, can be visited in an orderly manner following an itinerary marked that transits throughout four differentiated zones. At the reception they will inform us of the mentioned itinerary and we will also be able to entertain ourselves with the most propitious introduction, an audiovisual tour by the ecosystems and the flora from the most remote times, when hardly continental differentiation existed. We move towards the present little by little. Now the forests, the plant species are well cataloged ... The Botanical Garden of Gijón wants to be the most faithful sample of this latest evolution, it also aims to raise awareness, instill love for nature so that future times can conserve diversity and value correctly. to these living beings, much earlier than the human species.
4 spaces define the Botanical Garden
Currently, Asturias hides a renowned forest wealth. Spaces like those of Muniellos, Peloño, the Network Park ... make it a high-quality region in its forests and in a small biosphere reserve as a whole. The Asturian treasure is perfectly reflected in this immense garden, in the area destined to capture the Cantabrian Environment: beech, oak, holm oak ... shrubs, meadows, amphibious and aquatic plants, including also a good selection of rare and threatened plants.
The Vegetable Factory is another of the proper names in which the Botanical Garden is structured. In this area, the didactic focuses on the admiration of plants as useful beings, analyzing where, how and for what we take advantage of them. We will also observe a wide assortment of those others that are beyond our control and that grow around us even though we do not want them. Also flourish the Old World fruit trees (such as apple or citrus), and the New (pecans, avocados, custard apples ...). Finally, the Factory will surprise us with an authentic assortment of gardens of both territories, collections of spices, aromatic plants, medicinal ...
We arrived at Garden of the Island, an enormous stretch of orderly nature, carefully maintained for more than 150 years by the gijonés Florencio Valdés. The restoration of this beautiful place allows to see it now with other eyes, like a singular continent of this small botanical planet in which it has been immersed. There is no lack in this area the hydraulic mills that once were common in the work of attention to the landscaped spaces, nor the ponds, nor the labyrinths, nor the most splendid ornamental plants, nor the majestic and centennial trees, among which we highlight the cedars and bananas for a walk. The collections of bushes complete this section, as well as an orderly arrangement of fern, bulbous and oriental plants.
We have walked a long time, cultivating our sight and our vegetable learning, and we are reaching Atlantic itinerary, one of the most extensive corners of this park. Here we have sought to recreate entire landscapes, simulations of territories that are basic to both shores of the ocean. It includes the Mediterranean biome, the tropical Caribbean, the temperate and boreal of America and Europe, represented by the latter by the Carbayera de Tragamón (declared a Natural Monument of the Principality).
The nature of the Garden is reinforced by the cultural and ecological initiatives throughout the year develop their managers. Conferences and periodic cycles, workshops, conferences ... From season to season, the cycle of the Atlantic Botanical Garden is also a transit in learning, a superior course in the knowledge of our landscapes. For this we also have a specialized and well-stocked bookstore, a store of plants, areas of museography and a beautiful glass cafe to make a break between class and class.Text: © Ramón Molleda for desdeasturias.com
