The idol of Peña You carved on a mysterious rock has provoked a religious feeling since ever, and is a cardinal point of the Bronze Age in Asturias. It was in this time that it became a sacred place. This rock shows different neolithic symbols and is on itself to riddle. It is difficult to realize megalithic intention on it, perhaps because it has a divine origin. The most rational thought tell us that its profiles derived from constant wind erosion. It is definitely a captivating monolith placed in the middle of a plain range of earthy color, standing like a strong imam of millenary condition.
The central engraving on this amazing limestone is the abstract image of an individual: the supposed idol, with more than one meter of height and geometric stroke. Of its anatomy, conscientiously wrapped in some kind of robes, we can only realize a simple face with two eyes and a nose.
It has a deep stroke and pigments of color, the same as the arm, possibly a sword that stands by one side of this idol. With a stroke of sketch, on the side of the rock oriented to the east, we discover several little men that seems to be walking. One of them is carrying a big cane on its right hand.
All these symbols talk about hierarchies, hunting and battles, the ones of a rude man limited in means of survival that shows the first stages of development of the history of this council.
The ancestral richness of Llanes You have in Peña You have made to measure emblem. As it has been said before, it belongs to the Bronze Age and presents one of the best preserved symbols of that time. Paints, engravings and also a big number of funerary tumulus appeared in the nearest environment of the plain range of La Borbolla and its neighbor plateaus. The recent find of a human burying near Peña You, in the sima of Fuentenegrosu, informs us of the human use of this area since remote times. The skeleton belongs to a woman who was buried in this place with a personal trousseau: two bronze bracelets. The tests of Carbon-14 locate these rests in the First Iron Age.
In order to preserve this rich patrimony, and go on studying it in deep and divulge it, an interpretation room about Peña Tú has been opened at the feet of this range in which the idol stands. In this room we are given information about this ancestral age, so we know best the daily life of the old settlers of this region. The use of explanatory panels, audiovisuals and tactile interactive screens make us reconstruct virtually, these old shapes of life. In that way, the visitor is enjoying himself at the same time he is learning about an amazing period.
As the architects pretended, the most striking part is that highest. It is illuminated as if it were an altar and represents the iconography of Peña Tú, with reproductions of the found engravings and an audiovisual material that show it in more detail.
This room invites us to follow the route, the one that leads us to the idol. On the rock we can also check the process of christianization of the place and its representations through the superimposition of crosses carved on the rock, with shapes that seem to belong to medieval times. The name of "Head of the Gentile" for this monument, given by Vega del Sella and Hernandez Pacheco, the first investigators of Peña You in the beginnings of the 20th century, illustrates that idea of being in a sacred place but inherited from the paganism.
From the top of the range we can enjoy the majesty of the landscape. Down, the river Purón cuts this range into two parts. On the north we have the sea, on the south we find the mountain range of Cuera and the Dark Valley. In front of us we see towns, hills and forests.Text: © Ramón Molleda for desdeasturias.com
