This village shows a unique view of the Cantabrian sea and it is ideal for drawing a picture of it. By doing this, we will make sure we will keep its natural essence with us forever. The Spanish and well known film director, Jose Luis Garci, took some of these views in the film "Start over" (Beginning eleven more). This film was awarded Oscar and it was the first for the Spanish film productions. From its heights, Cudillero discovers itself as a fishing village. In ancient times, it had got the biggest fleet of the region, being also one of the most important of all the Cantabrian Coast. Today it is very usual to see the arrival of small fishing boats coming to this sheltered port. The village is also even more admirable. Very close to this port, we can also find a route for eating fish. In this area there is an ancient shipyard with artisan fish industries which took part is the process of canning additional fish.
Snacking is very usual in Cudillero in fact, visitors are really keen on doing it. Within its gastronomy we can find the famous «Pixuets», delicious sea snacks and "foodies" tasteful cooked fish. It is also important to mention that snuff is here called «Pixín». Under these words «Pixín» and «Pixueto» are here hidden the names referred to fish and man, a duality that is impossible to separate, we can not understand one without the other (a natural relationship).
Since ever, there has been a rivalry between the high neighborhoods and those neighborhoods close to the port. In the highest area called «Cai» live people who traditionally were in charge of farming. On the low area, live people whose lives depend basically on fishing. All the people living here, take much care of its tourism, because in the last years it is becoming a new important economical sector.
Now we move on to the most extended part of this village. Here we can smell the tasteful fishing tradition of this place: hake, snuff (pixin) and sea bream. Its seafood: spider crabs, lobsters and barnacles. Its most famous dish is the "Curadillo", a fish which is cured on open air and is also cooked on traditional style. Cudillero and the Cantabrian Sea offer a big variety of dishes in an unique and natural landscape.
In this same council we can also visit the locality of «El Pito», where it is located the Whole Palaciego Selgas, known as the asturian Versailles. It has a unique decoration: carpets, clocks, furniture, unique masterpieces and different oils belonging to Tiziano, Goya and El Greco. Also here, we can visit the church of Jesus of Nazareth, belonging to the 19th century that still keeps the oldest preroman altar of Spain (8th century).
In Cudillero we can also distinguish two important constructions: the parish church of gothic style and the chapel of Humilladero, its oldest property.
If we had to describe the council of Cudillero in short, we could say that from the Turbera of the Dueñas (declared Natural Monument) to the limit of the council of Valdés, a regional wide space of Natural and protected areas is here under the name of Protected Scenery of the Western Coast. In this territory there is a marked contrast between the coast and the interior. The coast is characterized by high cliffs (around 80 m. high): Cape Vidio and its lighthouse (heights around 100 m.), Punta Borona, Punta de Malperro, Cape of Concha of Artedo, etc .. The interior of this council is mountainous, for instance, Peñas de Cue at 786 meters above the sea level.
Along the cliffs we can also find coves such as La Arquina, and various beaches such as Aguilar, La Concha of Artedo, Oleiros, San Pedro, La Cueva, Vallina, El Silencio, Destillo or Ballota. In this coast we can also see small heavenly islands.
On June, 29th it is celebrated the festivity of L'Amuravela. In this feast, the town crier speaks in Pixueto (the language of Cudillero) about the events of the whole year in an ironic and critical way.
