The Biosphere Reserve Club was born, which aims to become a "differentiated" brand of product promotion and "sustainable" tourism in Asturias. The presentation took place in the recent edition of the International Tourism Fair (Fitur), one of the most important events in the sector. This project will help promote rural tourism, of which Asturias has always been a "leader".
Somiedo was the first municipality to obtain the title of biosphere reserve in the 2000, together with Muniellos, becoming the germ of the Fuentes del Narcea reserve.
At the moment, 236 establishments have adhered to this initiative, which according to the head of TourEspaña will become a "tourism resource of the first magnitude" and which shows the "commitment" of the government with sustainable tourism. The first step will be to assess that the companies interested in forming part of this club meet the requirements, among which the use of renewable energies and creativity when contributing to caring for the environment has been highlighted.
Asturias has always been committed to caring for nature, One third of the territory of the Principality is a protected area, which is equivalent to a total of 3.300 kilometers identified with a world brand recognized by Unesco: Biosphere Nature Reserve.
