The Biosphere Reserve Club has been born, which aims to become a "differentiated" brand for the promotion of products and «sustainable» tourism in Asturias. The presentation has taken place in the recent edition of the International Tourism Fair (Fitur), one of the most important events in the sector. This project will help promote rural tourism, of which Asturias has always been "leader."
Somiedo was the first municipality to obtain the title of biosphere reserve in the 2000, together with Muniellos, becoming the germ of the Fuentes del Narcea reserve.
For the moment, 236 establishments have adhered to this initiative, which according to the person in charge of TourEspaña will become a «tourist resource of the first magnitude» and in which the «commitment» of the government with sustainable tourism is seen. The first step will be to assess that companies interested in being part of this club meet the requirements, among which the use of renewable energy and creativity has been highlighted when contributing to the care of the environment.
Asturias has always been committed to caring for nature, One third of the territory of the Principality is a protected area, which is equivalent to a total of 3.300 kilometers identified with a world brand recognized by Unesco: Biosphere Nature Reserve.
